Health Action Training (HAT) are leaders in person-centred communication training.
HAT’s proven programmes use techniques drawn from actor training to teach health professionals how to improve interpersonal communication skills. The use of actors, drama students and private citizens to play the role of patients in medical simulation (as ‘standardised patients’ or ‘patient actors’) has been established practice globally for over 60 years. However, HAT are the leading company using techniques drawn from actor training to teach health professionals how to improve interpersonal communication skills more directly, and as a specific practice. The application of these techniques for healthcare professionals offers a vibrant, fresh, and innovative approach to learning.
Each of HAT’s courses are underpinned by evidence-based research, supported by high-level accreditation, and use engaging practical techniques. HAT courses are consistently reviewed extremely highly by participants, who highlight the fun, dialogue based, and interactive approach as essential for learning and practicing key skills. Designed for health professionals, HAT courses are proven to develop person-centred communication skills, resilience, teamwork, leadership, and more.
HAT training provides a framework for understanding and practising person-toperson interaction - in simulation, in clinical practice and in everyday life – teaching a set of concepts and techniques to improve the sensitivity and effectiveness of such communication. The result is improved performance of person-centred care.
HAT training uses widely applicable acting techniques to enhance learners’ understanding of Attention and Intentional Action. Consequently, its use is broadly applicable to many forms of interpersonal communication, whether one-to-one or in team settings, or face-to-face or via communication technology. It helps learners to think about communication as a set of motivated and complex interactions between people.
The HAT mission is to help people to connect with themselves and each other, as individuals and communities, supporting a global network committed to an ethics of care and meeting the needs of all people everywhere. HAT attempts to achieve that by teaching skills of attention, collaboration, and respect, building on the relationships, courage and compassion that make us human and help us grow.
