We started working within palliative care 13 years ago as a staff nurse on the inpatient unit at Bolton Hospice. Throughout our career as a nurse we have had the opportunity to further our knowledge and skills in all service areas of the hospice including community working with the Hospice at Home team. With a special interest in palliative education and training, We then went on to become a hospice educators. Being in this role for the last 5 years We have had fantastic opportunities to collaborate with others to provide excellent palliative and end of life care support and training to health care professionals, volunteers and carers working within Bolton and the wider communities. In 2018 we were awarded the Hospice UK Dying Matters award for our Supporting families through loss, grief and bereavement, this was a fantastic achievement for Bolton Hospice and the Education team. Following on from the success of this award we gained funding from cash for Kids Manchester to develop a family bereavement programme in collaboration with Child bereavement UK. This has led to further recognition from the Masonic Charity to award the education team with funding to develop a teenage bereavement project including support, staff training and the development of a meaningful bereavement toolkit to be used in over 17 high schools in the Bolton Community.
