My name is Shaun Webster, MBE.
I’m a CHANGE project worker of 21 years. Being a 50-year-old man, with learning disabilities, short-term memory, and dyslexia, I challenge the stereotypes, stigmas and inequalities people face. Nothing holds me back. I have my own home, a family and have written a book.
I experienced “coming out”. At 38 I told friends and family; I was bisexual. It only took me 20 years to know. Now I am learning more and more. There was no accessible information around sexuality and little support. People wanted to ‘fix’ my confusion with medication.
I believe in the social model of disability. If we change how we think about society, we can empower people with learning disabilities to be confident and powerful. We have a right to family life, to relationships and to have sex. It doesn’t have to be a taboo; we have human rights too.
