  • Bio

Professor Matthew Cripps BA MA CPFA is National Director of NHS RightCare, a part of NHS England that focusses on population healthcare improvement and helping the wider health service to identify and use techniques, tools and methodologies to increase value in healthcare.

Matthew is a chartered accountant and was an NHS Director of Finance before he moved into change management. In addition to his NHS career, Matthew is Emeritus Professor of population healthcare improvement at the University of Salford, and was previously Professor of Business Processing and Knowledge Transfer at the Manchester Metropolitan University Business School. Matthew has also written six publications on finance, business planning and healthcare system improvement, published by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and the Healthcare Finance Managers Association. He holds positions on numerous Public Health England and NHS England programme boards and leads the Commissioning for Value programme for NHS England, in partnership with Public Health England.

The NHS RightCare programme is now sponsored directly by Paul Baumann, NHS England Chief Finance Officer. Its focus on increasing value at system level, for individuals and the population, is seen as integral to the delivery of financial sustainability for the NHS. As such the approach and the principles of NHS RightCare’s flagship Commissioning for Value programme are embedded into the Future Focussed Finance programme, in particular the Best Possible Value and Closer Partnering work streams.
