Mental Health: Making the Forward Plans a Reality

Helen Garnham is National Programme Manager for Public Mental Health at Public Health England, with lead responsibility for suicide prevention. She is a key member of the National Suicide Prevention Advisory Group and an active member of the steering group for the National Suicide Prevention Alliance. She has developed and driven forward a major programme of work on suicide prevention at PHE. Her commitment to working with partners to drive whole system change has been pivotal to areas taking on the challenge to develop local suicide prevention plans. Her portfolio also includes work to promote the mental health and wellbeing of students and supporting the recently developed Prevention Concordat for Better Mental Health.
Helen was previously at the Department of Health, where she led on policy development and programme management, including the National Defibrillator Programme to provide 3,000 Automated External Defibrillators in the community and busy public places across England. Her work leading the early intervention Fit for Work Service pilots continues to inform best practice.
Within PHE, Helen is Co Chair of the Disability Network and passionate about ensuring that everybody is able to fully participate in society and be recognised for their unique contribution.
