James is the Senior Partner in a nationally renowned, award winning General Practice in the North West of England. He has a wealth of experience in General Practice, medical education and medical politics.
He is President of the National Association of Primary Care (UK) having previously served as Chairman from 2004-08.
He served as a senior GP advisor at the Department of Health to both ministers and the senior civil service from 1999 -2002 and from 2009 – 2013
Most recently, he was the National Clinical Lead for the English Department of Health’s implementation programmes for Clinical Commissioning, firstly for Practice Based Commissioning and latterly for the NHS Clinical Commissioning Community.
In this role he was also the Primary Care Lead on the DH Board of the National Clinical Directors.
He has also held advisory positions with NICE, CQC and Monitor.
He continues as the clinical lead for the National Primary Care Network, extending the work he developed in his most recent DH role.
He also leads the Anglo-Italian Association of Primary Care.
He now devotes half time in clinical practice and half time in national advisory roles and for company boards.
He is Chairman of Jhoots Pharmacy Group, Chief Medical Advisor for Assura Property Group and Editorial Director for a specialist commissioning publisher.
He holds directorships in Waring health Ltd, Education for Health, Dr Foster Ethics Committee and The Sound Doctor.
He is a Non-Executive Director of Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust having previously served at Board level, for 4 years, as Primary Care Advisor to Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS FT.
He was a GP trainer for 20 years and is an undergraduate tutor for the medical schools of Liverpool and University College London.
He is the resident doctor for BBC Radio Merseyside and regularly provides expert advice on national television and radio for both news and current affairs programmes.
His inspiring presentation skills have established him as a national and internationally renowned speaker.
He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen’s New Year 2012 Honours List for services to Medicine and to Healthcare.
Married to Sarah, they have 2 teenage daughters and live in the Wirral.
