Dr. Gavin Sandercock. BA (Hons.) MSc. PhD. Gavin is a Reader in Sport & Exercise Science and Director of Sports Science at the University of Essex where he has worked since completing his PhD. in Clinical Physiology in 2005. From 2007 to 2011 he lead the East of England Healthy Hearts Study and has published more than 30 peer-reviewed articles highlighting the stark falls in English children’s fitness and the factors associated with these changes. His current research is examining the associations between children’s fitness and Inspiration from the London 2012 Olympics and he is evaluating the impact of the Primary PE and School Sports Premium on physical fitness and psychological wellbeing of schoolchildren.
He is Director of Testing at www.FitmediaFitness.co.uk who provide fitness assessment solutions for Schools and other organisations used to track children’s physical development and allows the objective evaluation of interventions aimed at improving increasing physical activity and improving children’s fitness. A REPs Level 4 Qualified Exercise instructor, Gavin runs and instructs on the cardiac rehabilitation and exercise referral programmes for older adults based at the University of Essex.
Lucky enough to be born in October, he reached England U17’s National Squad selection for Rugby Union; swam for British Students and now competes in Ironman distance triathlon.
