Join us at the Urgent Care: Reducing Avoidable Admissions conference which will explore how the accident and emergency system is meeting it’s challenges. The highly politicised nature of urgent care, along with intense media scrutiny, makes it very difficult to ascertain the reality of the quality of care provision for patients. This conference will discuss the issues, look for solutions and share successes with a view to avoid any talk of another ‘winter of discontent’.
For many years the number of people attending Accident and Emergency remained stable at around 14 million per year. In 2013/14 the numbers increased significantly to 21.7 million; a rise of 30% over a decade (the majority to minor units) which has mounted pressure on an already overstretched service.
During 2014 A&E departments across England struggled to meet the target that 95 per cent of patients should wait no longer than four hours in A&E and waiting times reached their highest levels for a decade this last winter.
A Nuffield Trust report found that the number of patients waiting over four hours on trolleys to be admitted to wards had “almost trebled” from 2010-11 to 2013-14, whilst delayed ambulance handovers have risen by over 70 per cent over the same period.
Emergency admissions to hospital are those that cannot be predicted and happen at short notice. Over 1 in 4 patients that attended an Accident and Emergency Department during 2012/2013 were admitted, contributing to a 47% increase over fifteen years and costing the NHS £12.5bn per annum.
At Urgent Care: Reducing Avoidable Admissions the programme has been developed to understand the current pressures on A & E departments and explore the reasons for increased emergency admissions and how these can be avoided. Our line-up of expert speakers will provide insight, opinion and stimulate debate as to how to relieve the burden on hospitals and reduce unnecessary admissions. We will showcase a number of initiatives and examples of best practice from throughout the health and social care system and there will be ample opportunity for interactive discussion and networking amongst fellow professionals and peers.
