It is thought that 1 in 100 of the UK population is autistic, around 700,000 individuals, however its impacts can be far more reaching, with a potential 2.7 million people being affected by autism every day. The impacts of autism can be profound and devastating for individuals, carers, family members and friends.
Up until the 1960s autism was regarded as a rare disorder and as such very little was known or understood about the condition. Today awareness has significantly improved and support services have improved extensively, however, there is still some way to go to ensure that people with autism can achieve their full potential and lead fulfilling lives.
This conference will address the main issues and concerns facing the autistic community, such as diagnosis, early intervention and support. The very latest developments will be discussed, such as the SEN reforms, autism friendly communities and the government’s ‘Think Autism’ strategy. Case studies of best practice will be shared where examples of effective and innovative strategies are making a real difference to lives affected by autism.
