  • Bio

Paul Farmer has been Chief Executive of Mind, the leading mental health charity working in England and Wales since May 2006.

Mind’s vision is to ensure everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets both support and respect. The charity campaigns to improve services, raise awareness, promote understanding and provides advice and support on the phone, digitally and locally. Leadership and engagement of people with mental health problems is at the heart of its activities- over half of Mind’s staff and two thirds of its Trustees have personal experience of a mental health problem.

Mind was established in 1946 and has since grown into a major network with around 200 staff and a turnover of over £30 million centrally. There are over 150 independent and locally managed Mind associations providing over 1300 local services in England and Wales, helping around 400,000 people every year with an additional turnover of around £95 million.

Mind is a partner in the Time to Change campaign, the biggest ever campaign in England to tackle stigma and discrimination around mental health.

Paul is Chair of the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations (ACEVO), the leading voice of the UK’s charity and social enterprise sector. He is also a trustee at Lloyds Bank Foundation which invests in charities supporting people to break out of disadvantage at critical points in their lives.

Paul is Chair of the NHS England Mental Health Taskforce – bringing together health and care leaders and experts in the field, including people using services, to lead a programme of work to create a mental health Five Year Forward View for the NHS in England.

Paul has an Honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of East London, is an Honorary Fellow of St Peter’s College Oxford, and was awarded a CBE in the New Year’s Honours 2016.
