Karen has learning and physical disabilities and has experienced prejudice and social stigma thoughout her life.
Karen’s aim in life is to change society’s attitudes towards people who have physical, mental or learning difficulties to improve their quality of life.
Karen set up her own company with the help of her friend Bill Heron called First Step. First Step is all about helping other people with learning disabilities get the right advice and support.
Karen is the Co-chair for the Learning Disability Programme board for the Department of Health.
Karen was also the Co-Chairs the National Forum for People with Learning Disabilities.
Karen does lots of volunteer work and attends conferences and self-advocacy groups to speak up for people with learning disabilities on how to raise awareness on issues surrounding disabilities.
