Dr Harkensee graduated in medicine from Humboldt University Berlin, Germany in 1997. He trained in general paediatrics in Germany and Liverpool, UK, and in paediatric infectious diseases and immunology in Newcastle and London, UK. He completed a PhD in immunogenetics at Tokai University, Japan. As a consultant he worked in Singapore, North East England and now in Scotland. He has worked in humanitarian settings around the world, and developed health services for refugee children in the UK.
